The concept of the “15-minute city” revolves around the idea of creating urban environments where residents can access essential services, such as education, healthcare, work, and cultural activities, within a 15-minute walk or cycle from their homes. This concept aims to promote walkability, reduce the need for long commutes, and create more vibrant and sustainable neighbourhoods.
Many citizens are concerned that the concept of “15 Minute Cities” could be used as a mechanism of authoritarian control and tyranny. It is suggested that the 15-minute city concept is part of a plot to curtail individual freedoms and increase government surveillance. Some people fear that local councils could decide how often people go to the shops, ration who uses the roads and when, and police it all with CCTV.
