Is this the bankruptcy of a culture that really cannot see beauty?

This isn’t a film that is trying to reflect truth, this is a film that is trying to reflect a fantasy version of the world that they’re encouraging the audience to adopt.

The Myths

1. Being true to yourself is to remove any modifications you make in your behaviour for the sake of social norms.
2. Freaks are the well adjusted people and the ‘normal’ people are all screwed up.
3. The beautiful girl is shallow while the goth girl is deep – the real beauty is inside.
4. Conservatives who are against homosexuality are in-fact closet homosexuals.
5. The wives to conservative men are victims of abuse.
6. Work is oppression.
7. Marriage is oppression.
8. The family unit is oppression.
9. Taking drugs is liberation.
10. Beauty can be found in the mundane.

“Ultimately American beauty, I’m sorry to say, is a very shallow film that simply reflects the politically motivated prejudices of the people who made it, in a pretty hateful way in places it has to be said.”
