Jimmy Savile and Peter Sutcliffe:
Examining Their Relationship
The relationship between Jimmy Savile and Peter Sutcliffe, the Yorkshire Ripper, has been a topic of considerable discussion, especially in light of Savile’s own scandals. While Savile was never officially implicated in the Yorkshire Ripper murders, their paths crossed in notable ways.
Savile and the Yorkshire Ripper Investigation
- During the Yorkshire Ripper investigation (1975-1980), police questioned Jimmy Savile after receiving suggestions from the public. A former detective, John Stainthorpe, mentioned that the public had identified Savile as a suspect.
- One anonymous tip suggested Savile could act as an intermediary if the ‘Ripper’ wished to contact the police.
- Irene Richardson, Sutcliffe’s third victim, was found near Savile’s flat.
- West Yorkshire Police investigated whether Savile was a person of interest during the Yorkshire Ripper inquiry in the 1970s. Despite examining these connections, a West Yorkshire Police report found no evidence that Jimmy Savile was protected from arrest or prosecution because of his relationship with the force.
“Jimmy Savile, I believe, was an accomplice of Peter Suthcliffe, the monster who was eventually arrested and charged with the murders of 13 women.”

Savile and Sutcliffe at Broadmoor
- Savile regularly visited Sutcliffe at Broadmoor high-security psychiatric hospital, where Sutcliffe was held after his conviction.
- Sutcliffe claimed Savile would chat with him during visits and introduce him to his visitors. Sutcliffe also said that Savile would leave £500 for charities he was supporting.
- Savile allegedly had a private bedroom and gold-plated keys at Broadmoor.
- Savile would make tantalising references to his visits to Broadmoor and his conversations with Peter Sutcliffe.
Sutcliffe’s Defense of Savile
- Sutcliffe defended Savile against allegations of abuse, dismissing them as people “jumping on the bandwagon”.
- Sutcliffe told The Sun that reports of a friendship between them were exaggerations.
Peter Sutcliffe, the Yorkshire Ripper, murdered thirteen women between 1975 and 1980 and was sentenced to life imprisonment. Jimmy Savile, who died in 2011, has been accused of sexual abuse by numerous people.
