Phillippines

The controversy surrounding sterilisation programs in the Philippines is related to allegations of forced and coerced sterilisation of women, which has been documented in various countries around the world. The practice targets marginalised populations, including people diagnosed with a mental illness or disabled persons, racial minorities, poor women, and people living with specific illnesses, such as epilepsy. In the Philippines, there have been allegations of tainted vaccines being used to sterilise women, which has been denied by the WHO.

Africa

There have been instances of forced and coerced sterilisation of African women, particularly those living with HIV. Some specific cases include:

  1. South Africa: Between 2002 and 2005, at least 48 women were forcibly or coerced into signing sterilisation forms at 15 public hospitals in South Africa. The Commission for Gender Equality’s report revealed complaints of inhumane and degrading treatment, including threats by hospital staff not to assist women in giving birth if they didn’t sign the forms.
  2. Kenya: In 2012, a report titled “Robbed of Choice” documented the experiences of 40 women living with HIV who were sterilised without their consent. Five of these women successfully filed a constitutional petition against the Kenyan government for violations of their health and human rights. In 2018, four Kenyan women living with HIV were each awarded $20,000 in damages for being sterilised without their informed consent.
